Scott Lipps interview

Media Collection on Facebook

Grace was interviewed by Scott Lipps for his Lipp Service podcast. They talked mostly about her AGT days and the time before and shortly after that. They also talked a bit about Stargirl and the present. Scott Lipps asked a lot of questions but often didn’t wait for the answer. But he created a good vibe, and Grace handled the old worn-out questions very well.

Early musical influences. The two main things that she remembers her parents were always playing at home, Beatles, Sting, Jack Johnson, and Katy Perry (the Teen Dream album).

Inspiration for early songs. " Most of my early songs really were based on my family – in my sister of fighting with my mom."

On co-writing and (co-)producing. “I developed a great relationship with my label and fell in love with this life. Not just writing music and traveling but also going to studios and cowriting and learning different ways and processes of doing music. I love co-writing, and I love production; I want to be a full producer one day; I love being super-collaborative on production. Being able to write with people makes me realize that we all have safety nets of rimes-schemes and cadences that we sort of fall on to, and that makes all of your songs sound the same, and to have someone to work with takes you out of your comfort zone". She highlights Ido – “he is literally family to me at this point. I made moonlight with him, which was my first independent – label-let-me-do-my-thing song. And Mike Elizondo, I love that guy. “

Collaborating during the pandemic. “We tried to send files back and forth. But it just didn’t work; you’ve got to be there. Maybe at the tail end of songs, we can bounce back and forth. But for the birth of the vibe."

Fondest memories of touring. “I LOVE touring. Imagine Dragons definitely holds some of my best touring moments, even on a non-professional level; it was just the best summer of my life, there were such good people and me and my personal band. “

On being an opener. “I love being an opener; I would be happy being an opener for the rest of my life." Your dream tour? “I love to be surprised. But I really like Lorde – she musically inspires me a lot." Scott says that his buddy manages her, and he is having lunch with him so he will put it out there.

On acting. “I love acting, and it's fun, but it does not feel like touring; it is not like that passion core – it’s so great it’s me."

On not being managed by a parent. “My parents were as overwhelmed as I was; we were going through it at the same time; the only time we sort of talked, was at the end of the show when I won, and I talked to Simon, and we were discussing a full record deal. It was in that moment that me and my parents was starting to get the awareness that this was happening; this is something we were going to have to think through. And the only thing my mom really said to me was: No matter what, I am newer going to be your manager or work for you, and I said, no matter what, I never want you to be my manager or work for me. And to this day, this is the best decision we ever made."
