Interview with NOTION online
Grace was interviewed and photographed for NOTION online. This was the third time this UK-based outlet featured Grace. They had her on their 'Fanmail Live Q&A' on Instagram on May 4, 2020, and again in an interview on Notion Online on May 14, 2020.
The interviewer, Charlotte Gornall was a Fashion Journalism student at Central Saint Martins in London. The photographer was Yanran Xiong. (In a behind-the-scenes video published by Notion, Grace said that the photoshoot took place in New York, not in London as we originally assumed)
In the interview, Grace talked about what making music means to her and how superficial she finds much of the commercially driven art that is put out. And she talks about how it feels to be “the boss” of her own art now.
"Music was a way for me to take things out of my body and make them a physical thing, and now that physical thing is something that I’m proud of, I’m kind of soothed by listening to it and allowing it to be alive."
"I think that people just care about being popular now, and they are so scared of being disliked or having a project be disliked that it’s just all gotten very, very boring. Even if I don’t like something, I can commend it for its bravery. Money making has just taken over, and to me, in such a painfully obvious way. Bravery and art go hand in hand, I have a lot of pride in the fact that I will never hash, grab, or water down anything. I want my fans to know that whatever they’re hearing or seeing is coming directly from me."
"I’m kind of like the boss of my art. It grants a lot of freedom but also a lot of room to feel lost and not really know your footing. For the first time in my life, I really have that somewhat concrete."
NOTION published a benhind-the-scenes video on Instagram where Grace revealed that the photoshoot had taken place in New York
