Notes

“I hated Waste My Time at first, when we started writing it, because it sounded too repetitive and too generic pop, and because of that, I worked with a writer and producer named Ido, and he helped me to make the lyrics much more personal and outside of my comfort zone. I usually like my lyrics to be much more generic than that song, but it actually was the thing that made the song get released because it’s what made me like it.” (Grace introducing the song at the SiriusXM Coffee house performance March 26, 2020)

THE MUSIC VIDEO
This was also my concept for this video. I made this video with my really good friend Blythe Thomas, who is an incredible videographer and director. So, all of the aesthetics and movie elements of it were all on her part. I wasn’t even expecting that. And when I saw it, I absolutely loved like the movie feel of it, and that’s usually something I try to avoid, but I think it translated really well in this music video.

Something cool that I can think of to tell you about this video: we were not expecting rain, and it was really raining that night, and we couldn’t cancel the shoot because many people flew out, and many people were busy for the next coming days. So, it was crazy. And it actually worked in our favor. I think that it looks so beautiful and cinematic that way.

I love my outfits here. I actually have this dress right here in my closet. I was styled very nicely for this video.

Have you ever tried to like smoothly close an umbrella? It is nearly impossible. I had to do it so many times to do it like swiftly and throw it down just to open the door.

I really hope that you were able to see that with the slushie. That was just genius on Blythe’s part. I am making the slushie, and it goes bumph, perfectly to the beat of the music.

This [the scene with Miguel behind the counter] is definitely the best scene of the entire music video. It kinda draws in the same like old-fashioned, movie aesthetics in my opinion, with like the little captions that say “how much?”. And this is where we get introduced to the character of the music video, Miguel, who is my mannequin love interest. And this was my concept that I am extremely proud of, because I love the way it translated on screen. And actually, Miguel’s outfit was super unplanned too. My publicist brought in his shirt from a vintage shop that she found, which ended up working perfectly.

Lyrics

Runnin’ with you it’s like we’re in a memory
That I’ll try to forget when you go up and leave
Walkin’ slowly because the time’s been running far
Maybe I should grow up, leave you with a scar

You say ‘I love you’ with an accent
Then I pretend like nothing happened
Tell me won’t you miss Manhattan
And even though this is pointless
And even though this is hopeless

I just wanna waste my time
I just wanna waste your time
We can do anything you like
We can talk all night

I’m unsure of you because I know you’ll leave
You say ‘you love me’ but I whisper I don’t believe
Stopping moments cause I can’t let it be true
This is going nowhere but I love wasting my time with you

You say ‘I love you’ with an accent
Then I pretend like nothing happened
Tell me won’t you miss Manhattan
And even though this is pointless
And even though this is hopeless

I just wanna waste my time
I just wanna waste your time
We can do anything you like
We can talk all night

Just waste my time
Waste your time

You say ‘I love you’ with an accent
And then I look away and acted like nothin’ happened
Tell me honestly will you miss Manhattan
And even though this is pointless
And even though this is hopeless

I just wanna waste my time
And I just wanna waste your time
We can do anything you like
We can talk all night, I’ll pretend you’re mine just waste my time

Waste…
And time will fly
…my time
Waste…
For you I’ll happily waste my time
…your time
Waste…
And time will fly
…my time
Waste…
For you I’ll happily waste my time
…your time

At live performances Grace often ends the song with these lines, which on the recording are sung in the background:

Darling we have one life
And time will fly
So spend it wise
For you I'd happily waste mine and

You have one life
And time will fly
So spend it wise
For you I'd happily waste mine
