Performance [223] 10-Aug-2019 (Ur so Beautiful Tour - Festival)

Railbird Festival

The grounds of Keeneland Racetrack

Notes

"When I saw her name on the lineup, I immediately added it to my schedule. Still with her ukulele, but a little more grown-up, she put on an impressive show for anyone of any age, let alone a 15-year-old. During Grace Vanderwaal‘s set, I heard so many variations of “she’s so cute” or “oh my God I just LOVE her”. But they were right, they were just saying what everyone was thinking. For a 15-year-old – the talent, the stage presence, the charm – she’s simply lovable. America’s sweetheart. And she seemed genuinely thrilled to be performing for us. There were definitely more kids in the audience for her set than any other. Little girls with t-shirts and signs they couldn’t wait for her to see, and she pointed and smiled at each and every one of them throughout her set."

"Grace kicked off her new tour at Railbird and the few minutes I spent in the photography pit, it was easy to see why folks love her. She’s a star, but she’s also still a teenager. For me, that was what was so enjoyable about her set. Forgetting to grab her ukulele before the song started, she laughed it off where many artists would wilt like a flower in the sunlight. She’s fun, talented and a wonderful example for many young ladies, many of which were in attendance". (Capturekentucky.com)

"From a different generational plain altogether was 15 year old Grace VanderWaal, whose early evening set showcased an eager-to-please scrapbook of pop sketches, from the electronica spiked “Ur So Beautiful’ to the ukulele-led “Escape My Mind” to the quirky power pop slant of “Talk Good.” Taylor Swift was perhaps an inevitable comparison. Luckily, VanderWaal recalled the megastar’s stylistic breadth without the Olympian sense of self-involvement." (Musicalbox blog – Walter Tunis Aug 11 2019)

This was the first "Railbird Festival", held at the Keenland Race Track. A "railbird" is "a racing enthusiast who sits on or near the track rail to watch a race or workout" (Merriam-Webster)
