Notes

Grace teased the song on a TikTok live on March 26, 2021. Grace had played a very short fragment of the song back in January (January 6 2021) when she was in the studio.

In the pre-release live-stream Grace explains that background for the song: "This is what the song is about. One time I was in New York City. I was with my friends. It was my laaaast night in New York City. And I had a curfew of midnight. And I didn't want the curfew, and It was my last night so I just...Didn't. It was an awful night, but, it was fun in the time being. And that's what I wrote the song about. It was in my time of that little run and free moment. It was very exhilarating, until it wasn't. I wouldn't recommend it. It was exhilarating though and that is why if real like the song sounds very exhilarating. I feel like the song sounds like the feeling of sneaking out."

The first "review" (or rather independent media opinion) of the song came from Teen Vogue. They put the song in their "This week's Best New Music Friday roundup " and wrote: "Grace Vanderwaal's rock ‘n roll era continues with her new single “Repeat,” a rock-country banger with a video that sees her in a delightfully cocky romp around the city. The early Pink energy is intense, and Grace’s capacity for evolution and risk-taking is part of what makes her so exciting to listen to. "Don't say that I should know better," she rattles off in her smoky belt. “Don't know why I'm drawn to fear.”

This was quickly followed by a real review on Soundvapors.com: "Grace has taken that next step to becoming an enigmatic front-person and maybe even ala Marilyn Manson at some point (I’m talking theatrics and stage presence here, nothing more) or PJ Harvey. She’s already brought that energy to her performances but now she seems to have found an extra gear of confidence and swagger that will keep elevating her as she tours and continues to release new music." Lyrics

Don’t say that I should know better
No shame, messed up, broken mirror
Don’t know why I’m drawn to fear
Hm

Walking downtown, smiling stranger
Light up, burnt out, thought I knew ya
I’ll pretend I don’t see through ya
Hm

Off the safety, I shoot the gun and I, and I, and I go again
Off the rails and I’m on the run and here, here, here we go again
Flip the switch and I’m in the mode, but I’m in control
Just so you know. And I, and I go again

Dark night, bright light, self-destruction
Blow my phone up, your obsession
I don’t need another lesson
Hm

It won’t kill me
Treading lightly
Please don’t hate me
Smarter than you think

Off the safety, I shoot the gun and I, and I, and I go again
Off the rails and I’m on the run and here, here, here we go again
Flip the switch and I’m in the mode, but I’m in control
Just so you know. And I, and I go again

Oh LaLaLaLaLa
Oh LaLaLaLaLa
Oh LaLaLaLaLa
Oh LaLaLaLaLa

Off the safety, I shoot the gun and I, and I, and I go again
Off the rails and I’m on the run and here, here, here we go again
Flip the switch and I’m in the mode, but I’m in control
Just so you know. And I, and I go again
