Let Me Hate You (Original)

Type: Official
Writers: Grace Vanderwaal
Times Performed: 5

Notes

On the IG live, where Grace first played a recording of this song, she noted, "I don’t think this will make the album/EP whatever it’s going to be, but that’s why I am playing it here, because I want it to live on, because I love this song. I was writing down songs that are probably going to be on the EP, and I feel like there are too many reoccurring themes, like “Let me hate you”, hate, hate, hate, hate – I don’t like you. And I don’t want to keep repeating myself."

At the first live performances of the song, at the Purgatory in Brooklyn, N.Y., on June 7th 2023, and later at the Sleepwalk Bar on June 10th, Grace gave some background to the song:

I don’t know if you have ever known someone who is very charming, and they are just nice to be around. But they are so fucking terrible in your life. And you know to be like the best version of you, you can’t have them, but they are so damn fun. … it’s kind of like dealing with a narcissist, someone that charms you in enough to get the gratification that you love them, you like them, and the fucking knock you down again, and it gets fucking tiering. And you are aware of it, but they’ve just got that – je ne sai quoi, and they are so fucking good on you that just keep going back to them. It’s like if you really cared, you would let me hate you like an asshole. (combination of the introductions at the two gigs)

Lyrics

Sick to my stomach at night
Remembering all the lies you told, with such sweet eyes
Just want you out of my life
I know that is harsh but you’ve got to realise

God, why don’t you let me hate you
You mask up and can be so likeable and sweet
Ooh, just let me hate you
Honestly, that is the least you can do for me

I had a dream about you once
You smiled sweetly, and stabbed me fifteen times over
Sorry’s are not just a cover up, Ed(think she was mentioning You Know Who by name…)
So that you can do the same thing again
I don’t trust one word from you no, my friend
I don’t trust one word from you no, my friend

God, why don’t you let me hate you
You mask up and can be so likeable and sweet
Ooh, just let me hate you
Honestly, that is the least you can do for me
For me
For me

For me
For me ah

God, just let me hate you
You mask up and can be so likeable and sweet
Mm, just let me hate you
Honestly, that is the least you can do for me
