Perfectly Imperfect Release Party - Teen Vogue Livestream

Notes

Grace was interviewed by Teen Vogue deputy editor Ella Cerón. She answered questions from Ella and questions from viewers on Facebook. Most of the questions were music related.

How do you get the inspiration for your songs:: “Sometimes I can sit down and say, “I want to write a song right now” and other times it just hits me, I could be like eating something and then … oh my gosh! And I just run upstairs and write it down. All different.”

Why do you like playing the ukulele so much:: “because it’s simple. I am not a patient person at all. And I think that’s why I don’t di piano anymore because that requires so much patience and concentration and the ukulele is something you can pick up, like really fast”

On the production of Perfectly Imperfect:: “Really what we did was, we recorded the song and then like totally messed around with it. If this sounds good, we will keep it if this sound bad we will take it out. That’s too much, could we take a little out, or if it’s too little, put a little in. Just kind of like experiment with it. It was cool to like watching your baby grow up.”

What is your favorite song that you wrote: : “Gossip girl, because its different and I like the sound of it. The song is more dark than I usually do. I usually try to do like “empowering” songs and this one is more like pointing someone out for something they did, it was kind of like I really wanted to get that out of my system, rather than dwelling on that one memory and that one thing that happened.”

About the process of writing “Light the Sky”: “at first I Wanted to make like kind of a ‘rebellion’ song. I wanted it to be like one of those cool songs that when you listen to it, you feel like going outside and like start riding a skateboard or something.

A Facebook viewer asked Grace for her advice for anyone who wanted to start writing and singing like she has done. Basically, her advice was to believe in themselves, as she had done because “I got turned down all of my life, because I was never popular, and I lived in a community where singing doesn’t matter at all, it matters who you are how popular you are. And it made me think that I kind of stink at singing”
