Notes

Interview at 108 Q102 Philly: ”She also opened up about how her latest single, “Sick of Being Told”, was born. “I remember I had a writing session that day with a producer, One Love, and I was kind of going on a rant (about how my team passed on an idea for the “Moonlight” video),” she shares. Grace adds, “I was like, ‘I’m so sick of it.’ I’ve done all these things, and so many people have told me, ‘No, you’ll fail. You’ll end your career. You’ll get voted off.’ And I do it and it works great.” (Justjaredjr 2017-08-29)

“Sick of being told is a little rebellion song just like “you, let me do my thing”. The little choir is all me and the [unintelligible]. We just layered it like 50 times, doing “Oh, oh, oh, oh oh” and then we could do really crazy ones” (Behind the song video, released Dec. 18, 2017)

REVIEW: “On “Sick of Being Told,” Vanderwaal has a very common disease that infects teen youth – rebelliousness. On the first verse, she desires independence, further asserting her desires on the pre-chorus and chorus sections. Perhaps its teen through and through, adults actually can relate as well. Besides an interesting theme and lyrics, the production is solid, as well as the vocals. (Review, The Musical Hype Nov. 8, 2017)

Lyrics

I don’t wanna be difficult
At all
But let’s just try it my way
I mean c’mon

I’ve showed you countless numbers of times
That I can do it (I can do it)
So for one time in your whole life
Just let me try it (let me try it)

I’m sick of being told
Of what I should know
I just wanna let go
I wanna run away just to live my life my way
Hey, woah
Sick of being told
Woah
Sick of being told

What’s the harm
To have a little fun?
Been so uptight
I don’t mean to fight
I’m just, sayin what

I’ve showed you countless numbers of times
That I can do it (I can do it)
So for just once in your whole life
Just let me try it (let me try it)

I’m sick of being told
Of what I should know
I just wanna go
I wanna run away just to live my life my way
Hey, woah
Sick of being told
Woah
Sick of being told
Woah

I see stars, you just see holes in the sky
You tell me you see it too, but I know that’s a lie
I dream in the night, just see the darkness of your eyes
I won’t let you change me tonight

I’m sick of being told
Of what I should know
I just wanna let go
I wanna run away so I can live my life my way
Hey, woah
Sick of being told
Woah
Sick of being told

Woah
Sick of being told
Woah
Sick of being told
