Paste Magazine Live

Notes

The A-Team
Grace played three songs at this event, but it was her cover of Ed Sheeran's "The A-Team" that really left a mark:

”Grace VanderWaal delivers haunting Ed Sheeran cover with guitar from Shawn Mendes” (AXZ.com)

”Thirteen-year-old America's Got Talent winner Grace VanderWaal stopped by the Paste Studio in New York this week to play songs off her debut EP Perfectly Imperfect. We still can't get over her Ed Sheeran cover of "The A Team.". "I didn't realize how deep the lyrics were until I actually wanted to learn it," she said. "I was like dang, this song is really deep." (PasteMagazine)

”The 12-year-old ukulele strumming singer showed her unseen vulnerable side, becoming noticeably emotional during her delivery of the dark song. Sheeran came up with the song following one of his earliest gigs playing for the residents of a local homeless shelter. Deeply moved by some of the stories shared with him, the singer channeled their experiences into his music to tell the tragic story of someone caught up in a “Class A drug”.” (Countryrebel.com)

”Grace VanderWaal’s Cover of Ed Sheeran’s “The A-Team” Has Us Like, “Whoa” Now, 12-year-old Grace VanderWaal (you know, from “America’s Got Talent“) has covered the song — and it’s crazy good. The performance, which is incredibly simple and pure, perfectly showcased Grace’s talent, as well as the emotional meaning behind Ed’s song.”

This was Grace's first performance, playing the guitar
“Played guitar live for the first time today for an @edsheeran cover Thanks again for the guitar, @shawnmendes!” (Grace on twitter 24. jan 2017)

Grace only started learning to play the guitar the week before the video was shot. At that point she could not imagine she would ever leave the ukulele behind: "For me, It think I’m gonna kind of stick with the ukulele or no ukulele now. I want to learn the guitar and have the experience. I would love to learn it with him [Shawn Mendes], but I don’t think I would be always playing the guitar.” (Interview with “People” aired Dec. 2, 2016)
